Two lands.....one idea...

Welcome

Welcome to the website of Limestone Mountain Farm, a unique, local-but-yet-"international" adventure in growing food and farming.

Limestone Mountain Farm is located near the village of Saint George, Tucker County, West Virginia.  It's a hill farm, with hills that provide a lovely view of Limestone Mountain. It has lovely spring water and is teeming with wildlife (deer, turkeys, groundhogs, etc.!)

My farm, Limestone Mountain Farm, is roughly one-half of the farm that my Grandad and Grandma Stiles originally bought from John Robinson in the late 1940s.  There, they produced everything from strawberries to poultry to vegetables to cattle to sheep.

For the past seven years, since buying it from my Dad in 2003, Limestone Mountain Farm has been managed organically, following the NOP standards of USDA, but I'm not yet certifed organic, due to the costs associated with getting certified (I'm focusing on improvements like fencing and troughs).  The goal is to raise grass-fed sheep, cattle, and other pastured livestock on the farm's beautiful hills, gradually improving the soil, the pastures, and infrastructure of the farm.

JusticeHere is a photo of "Justice" - one of the new heifers brought to Limestone Mountain Farm in spring 2009. Just call 'em "The Limestone Girls"! Justice and her companions, Faith, Hope, and Charity (they have very long ID numbers, but that's no fun for names!) arrived from the McKean Brothers of Pennsylvania farm on May 23rd.

Here, below, are photos of the 2010 Limestone Girls -(Peace, Mercy, Grace and Virtue), who were also purchased from Greg and Peggy McKean, whose stellar reputation for breeding Angus that will finish on grass is well deserved.

The 2009 "Limestone Girls" enjoyed their new home, the wonderful spring water that the farm provides via the watering trough set by Bull Run Construction (as well as a portable one when they're in the far paddock), and the mix of bluegrass, dutch clover, orchardgrass, alfalfa and broadleaf species that are in these beautiful fields! Justice, Hope, and Charity were sold to Dawn Campbell of Randolph county, a good home with a family with a long and illustrious background in the cattle business.  I hope I'll be able someday to get some calves from Dawn's herd.  Faith, without work, is dead--but it's a happy story!  Faith fit, just barely, in the freezer, as steaks, roasts, ground beef, stir-fry strips, and a plethora of expertly-done cuts courtesy of local butcher Dick Campbell. Getting some shadeFaith finished out the best and so was taken to the wonderful Campbell's Market in Beverly, Randolph County, West Virginia.  This grocery store and meat counter is just like the old-time stores of old--small, friendly, and just the best place to shop!  As they have a state-inspected beef processing plant, it was the place to take Faith and end up with the beef that I and other family members have been enjoying.
